Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana
Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY)
The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is a pivotal initiative launched by the Government of India on August 28, 2014. This scheme aims to promote financial inclusion by providing universal banking services to every unbanked adult in the country. The program is designed to empower citizens by facilitating their access to essential financial services, thereby enhancing their financial literacy and stability.
Overview of the Scheme
As part of the National Mission for Financial Inclusion (NMFI), PMJDY was introduced with the vision of ensuring that financial services reach every household. Initially focused on covering every household, the scheme was revised on August 14, 2018, to target every unbanked adult, thereby expanding its outreach. The initiative rests on the principles of banking the unbanked, securing the unsecured, funding the unfunded, and serving the underserved areas of the nation.
To enhance the attractiveness of the scheme, the following modifications were made:
- The overdraft (OD) limit was increased from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000.
- The accidental insurance coverage for RuPay cardholders was raised from ₹1 lakh to ₹2 lakhs.
PMJDY has significantly contributed to improving the banking penetration across India, ensuring that marginalized sections, including low-income groups, can access crucial financial services such as basic savings accounts, credit facilities, remittance services, and insurance.
Key Benefits of PMJDY
- Basic Savings Bank Deposit Account (BSBDA): Any eligible Indian citizen can open a BSBDA without needing to maintain a minimum balance. Account holders can utilize bank branches, ATMs, and Banking Correspondents (BCs) for cash transactions, although cash withdrawals are limited to four times a month.
